A Journey Written in Flavors
Hi, I’m Ethan Cole.
I grew up in San Jose in a family where food wasn’t just something we ate. It was something we talked about, argued about, and experimented with in the kitchen. One of my fondest memories is standing on a small stool beside my granny in her kitchen. I watched her work magic, balancing flavors without a single measuring cup. She’d taste a spoonful of tomato soup, pause, and sprinkle in just a pinch of salt. Then she’d turn to me with a knowing smile. It always seemed to say, “Yummm…!! That’s exactly right.” I always wondered how she managed to cook so deliciously every single time, while my attempts later often failed.
Years later, while working a corporate job in San Francisco, I had to cook dinner for myself. At first, it felt like a Herculean task because I was a terrible cook. The kitchen often felt chaotic. I overcooked rice until it turned black, and once I accidentally used baking soda instead of baking powder while making pancakes, ruining the entire batter. Another time, I grabbed paprika instead of chilli powder for a pot of chili, and the flavor turned out completely wrong. Mistakes like these were common, and my meals rarely turned out the way I imagined.
Little by little, experimenting with flavors, cooking every day, and genuinely enjoying it slowly changed everything. That realization sparked a deeper question: how do people get it right every time? How do you master flavor and technique so your dishes actually taste as you intend? Chasing that answer eventually became the foundation of this website.
I began documenting all my experiments, first in a notebook, then on a small blog. At first, it was just a personal project. Over time, it became a space to explore flavor pairings I loved, save recipes I came across while traveling, and experiment with drinks that can elevate a dish.
Now, this space is my way of sharing that journey, spreading the aroma of food, putting all my discoveries into words, and teaching culinary lessons to everyone who loves cooking. It’s an ongoing exploration of food: how to cook it, feel it, and truly experience it.
